3d Space shooter #2

0

Today I was working in Unity again on the new space shooter project and today I  had a fun time making the game. Today I was working on the background and making it roll to give it a sense that the player was moving through space, there was a lot of trial and error in getting the right speed, distance and length.

I was also working on particle effects for the game, I was working on just a simple design for the game to make it feel more sci-fi to the game. This were for my flames on the end of the ship so that it looked like there was some king of engine working, I got the particles from the effect column which I got some particles which I then edited things such as the colour, length and duration of them.  I also at the end was designing a laser bolt for the ship to fire at the end of the lesson which I shall finish later on.

In conclusion to this day I found that it helped my understanding of how to use unity and how to design a game, I found it fun to do and I am keen to learn and understand the software more in future lessons.

3d Space shooter #1

Today in game design we were told to make a game by ourselves independently in making a 3D space shooter game. We were given a file to work with to understand how to make it and we also downloaded some effects and materials of to help make the game. I felt like this was a good task as I could understand and figure out how to make the game however for me Unity bugged out at towards the half hour of the lesson and had to restart to get it working again, unfortunately it did not start up for some unknown reason so I could not complete it, I have the files what I need to make the game so I will probably do some of this at home so I can catch up and learn how to make a space shooter game.

What I think I would do differently if I was to go back on this lesson again is to have planned out my time a bit better and that way I could maybe have made a bit more progress to my game.

Weapon designing #2

0

Today in games design we have been continue doing our concept art I have been sketching out the scale of my weapon by making two drawings of a person with my weapon design which I have made. The first one is using gesture to show how a person may hold the weapon and the second is showing how someone would use the weapon when using the scope. This side by side comparisons of  my weapon with a person is to  show the scale of how large the weapon and all of the pieces with it would, it was of course also to see if someone could actually use the weapon and not just something which is hard to hold in combat.

I also went onto drawing a couple more sketches of my design and then added the colours in, I did two different types today to see what colours would suit best and were to use them in my design, I personally prefer the one were it uses a larger use of blue over the red in the second image below.

Overall I found today to be quite and fun and I feel like I have progressed in making my skills better in the area of concept art of when it comes to this course of game design.

Research

0

Today in games design I was doing a research task which I had to use the images from what I got last Monday after I went on a trip to the royal armouries. We were told we were going to use these images as part of our research and to help give us ideas on how to make a design for our own 3D weapon and then turn it into a 3d model.

Today I was starting off by making a mind map to gain a few ideas to start of thinking of what my weapon may be like, whether it is either a melee weapon or long range the choice is mine. Here is the mind map of what I made at the start of the lesson just putting my first few ideas down.mind map #1 After that I then went onto making a mood board using some of the pictures which I gathered from my trip, however I had an unusual problem uploading the photo’s of the device I used so I will update it later with some of the pictures which I took.

After the mood board I then went onto making a document which stated what primary and secondary research was. Primary is basically first hand research what you got yourself, for example if I went to a museum and gathered information there that would be primary, secondary would be using information from book’s and online websites, for my mood board I used both primary and secondary images of which I took and found online.

Designing out my level

0

Today in games design I have been working on what my game is exactly about such as what the game objective is and what the game does and why it does it. I drew out my levels on paper which I add in all the game items such as the coins and the turrets etc. What my game objective is to collect keys and all the survivors and then get to the finish area with out the player getting destroyed by an enemy soldier or turret. I am planning on creating some sort of story to go along with the game as to why the player is here and what has happened and what will happen. I so far have completed the first two level ideas to my game and currently in progress on my third, the third I am going to have some sort of maze level to it so it has a better range of variety to what the game has too it as I want to make my game as interesting and challenging as I can. I am designing a boss for my game as a fun bonus level at the end as maybe for an alternative ending depending on what the player does in the game. I have thought to maybe give it some sort of special abilities to make it more fresh to the game and to give the player a better challenge to beet.

I am also going to give the player some sort of special abilities of what the player can get if the player collects coins, if the player collects five the player can buy an upgrade to make it easier to beet the enemies.

Designing a character

0

Today in games design we were continuing our game designing ideas and expanding them out more. Today I designed one of my characters which would be a villain in my game, I design a foot soldier of an alien design I first sketched out an idea of what it would look like in my book and then went into photo shop to start creating the character’s image. I am still working on it so it is a working progress and have not just finished it yet but here are a couple of images at the bottom of how my design process for making my 2D game character. I had fun making it and thinking of creative ideas and found it interesting to do, as I made the character it helped me to think of new and interesting new features which I could add such as the rocket legs and I may add some sort of advanced armour onto the character to make it more intimidating.alien

gesture (concept art)

In this lesson of concept art we got told of how to make gesture in showing how the body movement is shown in how it is positioning. We got told to start of by doing the first lines going from places like the neck to the waste and other lines going from the waste to the foot. We got told that you can show gesture clearly on how close each of the lines are together if a person is about to do a kick with lines which are in more of a z shape or use a smooth line to show were someone is just holding an object. We got shown some images and were told to begin practicing our gesture poses on the people who are in the picture. At the bottom are two gesture poses of what I did from some of the pictures what we were given, these two was a man about to throw a punch and a women doing a kick in the air.

Body features (concept art)

Today I began being taught how to start to make a hand with a simple technique. We began drawing lines and then adding in the boxes to the shape and size of a hand to the right proportion. We then went on to carefully  removing the guide lines of which I used earlier to begin making the hand and then carefully adding in a few details to make it a little more realistic.

Concept art #1

For the first lesson in concept art we started to practice using circles and making them into monsters to begin to become creative in making unique different monsters just from starting off with one shape.  We got told that it is good to make character’s with concept art to chose the best design and that it helps to pick out the designs which stand out from other game characters.  We were also give two cards to put them together to give one design I was given were… and plumber so I basically just decided to have a go at making super Mario turning into a werewolf . I have never really done much art before and I don’t think of myself as an artist so as one of my first drawings it is not a work of art but instead a work in progress as I hope to learn new skills to become better at concept art.
